Malfunctioning electronic connectors can have serious technical and financial consequences. The reason for failure is often corrosion as due to the composition of connectors moisture can enter. A higher conductivity of the connectors as well as an increased corrosion resistance are therefore necessary. In order to achieve this the connector pins are cleaned and activated using an Openair-Plasma jet. Afterwards, the pin assembly is treated with a second plasma beam, which applies a nanocoating as an adhesion promoter. This second step is an advanced form of chemical vapor deposition (CVD): a plasma beam generates and applies a dry primer that supports adhesion while sealing the metal surface against corrosion. The cleaned, activated and coated pin is then ready for a next step in which the connector casing is applied by injection molding. The plasma treatment results in an assembly with high resistance and high functional reliability, without gaps between the electrical contacts and the plastic connector housing.
