Reduced risk for defects through uniform activator system for water- and alcohol-based fluxes

Using different fluxes often comes with a risk for defects due to potential cross-reactions. Especially the use of water and alcohol based fluxes in one production setup is subject to this risk. To counteract this, uniform activator systems for water- and alcohol-based fluxes are necessary. For example, water-based fluxes have not previously been recommended for hand soldering or rework due to their slower drying behavior. However, customers who used these fluxes for wave or selective soldering wanted to have the same activator system for hand soldering as well, in order to prevent cross-reactions of the different fluxes where necessary.

Until now it was not chemically possible to dissolve the activators of water-based fluxes in pure alcohol. However, we have now succeeded in doing this, so that the first flux on the market is made of 100% pure alcohol, but contains the same activators as the water-based flux. This has the advantage that the customer does not have to worry about any cross-reactions when using the water-based flux for wave and selective soldering, but uses the new type of flux for manual soldering, reworking, strand tinning or cable assembly. For these applications in particular, a short drying time is important, which is why alcohol-based fluxes have been favored by many users for this purpose. Due to the same activator system, these short drying times can now be guaranteed. This innovative solution is unique to date. We are working on further uniform activator systems for water- and alcohol-based fluxes,” says Geßner.
